Our Wedding: Invitations

Now that some of the dust has settled, I thought it might be nice to share some of the details from our November 2017 wedding.

JD and I tied the knot on the second day of November high up above Downtown Brooklyn in the Judge’s chambers with a panoramic view of New York as the backdrop. It was small and intimate with a grand total of eleven guests and was followed by dinner at One if by Land, Two if by Sea.

We hatched the plan for our big day one lazy afternoon in Apple Bay. I was flipping through a copy of Martha Stewart Weddings, seeking inspiration when I spotted a moody dark gray invitation suite with silver foil and a simple font. As we continued along the process of planning that suite stuck in the back of my mind. I knew it was something I wanted to draw inspiration from when it came time to design our invitations.

If you've ever planned a wedding or a party the requires invitations you already know that they can be extremely pricey, especially if you want a custom or more customized design. While there were a lot of beautiful and affordable options out there, none of them were the moody dark gray I had my heart set on and in the rare instance when they were, there was always a pattern or design - usually strung lights across top that could not be removed, a non starter for me.

JD was the one who first discovered Basic Invite. I don't recall how, but I'm happy he did. As soon as we realized that we could go in and edit each individual element of the invitation it was a done deal. I like to really get into the details when it comes to most things, especially design, so being able to go in and customize every last aspect from card color to font, sizing, foil, etc. was amazing. It took some time, patience, and a few rounds of ordering samples of what we had put together to get it just right, but the end result was exactly what we had imagined sitting in the sand all those months prior.

Basic Invite was even kind enough to help us out when we had to change our party venue at the last minute – a story for another day and something you might have spotted in the shot above as I handed our photographer, the incredible and extremely patient Kate Ignatowski, the wrong info card along with the invitation suite.

One of the things I really appreciated about Basic Invite was that we had the ability or order samples of the designs we came up with. Getting to see exactly how the final product would look and feel ahead of time made placing the order one less thing to worry about and allowed us the opportunity to do some further tinkering. Turns out the silver foil ended up being a little hard to see in person and we ended up loving the rose gold so much more (which coincidentally was harder to capture on film)!

I had never really thought about the envelopes. I knew I wanted a liner for the interior, which we also customized by uploading our own image of a celestial map. We went through a few different shades, settling on the shimmer, dark blue for the replies, copper for the invitations once we decided to move away from silver all together. We opted not to use Basic Invite’s address capturing service (which is free btw!) as I wanted to handwrite them myself, which ended up being more of a challenge than I had anticipated. As luck would have it, I had to buy special pens to write on the shimmer without it wiping off or sinking right in to the paper. Retrospectively, had I known how much time it was going to cost me I would have taken advantage of this and had them printed.

At the end of the day JD and I were so pleased with how they turned out!

If you’re in the market for any kind of invitations, announcements, or even cute business cards you should definitely check them out! I know graduation season is right around the corner for which they have some really pretty options (my faves herehere, & here), and though I have zero instances in my life where I could/would hand them out, I’m kind of obsessed with these clear business cards. You can find more awesome graduation invitations herehigh school graduation party invitations here, and even football graduation invitations.
