seaside

Year after year I find myself searching for the perfect shirt dress. It seems like something that shouldn't be so difficult to find, a timeless classic, but I'm picky. I'm still thinking about that lovely peach one that Leighton Meester wore in Monte Carlo. Let's just ignore the fact that I've seen snippets of that movie. That dress was perfect, and most likely made specifically for her. This sleeveless Theory number is a close second. I always love a full skirt and while I might change out the belt for something with a little more color, I like that it's made to have one. Trying to belt an unwilling dress can get ugly real fast.

For a daydream of a seaside stroll (on the French Riviera if we're getting specific), I'd pair it with a neutral handbag and wedges, bright red lips, and top with a pretty blue scarf for that Grace Kelly feel.

red

Lately I've been feeling very frustrated by my hair. The situation I'm sure, is not helped by the fact that it rained on and off all last week. Suddenly every undesirable characteristic stepped out from the shadows. Too greasy at the roots, too dry at the ends, a frizzy mess in the middle. No "just right", fairy tale proportions for me. That's what I get for bragging about the magic dryer. It was only a matter of time before I turned back into a pumpkin. So I twisted it up into messy ponytails, braids, and buns and left it alone. Yesterday morning, expecting more of the same I let it air dry about eighty percent before hitting it with the dryer and bam, it was back to normal. Boring, straight, unwilling to hold style, normal.

If my hair says absolutely anything about me I'd rather not have last week on record.  A few weeks ago Madison Reed, a company that focuses on healthier for your hair coloring, asked if I'd be interested in sharing just that, specifically what my hair color says about me.
In the earliest memory I have of any thoughts on my hair, I am standing in front of the mirrored living room wall, slowly pulling a comb through chestnut curls, thinking it was the wrong color. It should have been blonde, not a dark reddish brown with one measly patch of that glorious gold hidden beneath a cowlick. It's admittedly an odd thing for such a young child to think, and who knows why, but that's how I felt as far back as I can remember. I never considered how it would look or that my coloring was all wrong, but what three year old does? Once I grew up and swallowed that pill I began to embrace my natural color. It matches my sense of humor, kind of dark and a little surprising.

These days I find myself chasing after those auburn curls. I look forward to sun drenched summer days spent at the beach, a chance to soak it back in. Hitchcock blonde is not in the cards for me, it never has been, and that's okay. It wouldn't suit me quite as well. I still have that patch of gold, and that's enough.

oldies

With the change of season I find it very easy to fall into that all too familiar rut of having nothing to wear. I spent each morning last week standing in my closet, going over each piece, wondering what in the world I wore last spring. Did I just not get dressed? And why do I have so few skirts? My solution is to get back to basics, pull out some things I haven't worn in a while and go from there. I've had this top for years and years but it hasn't been in rotation for a while. The last time it was we were  exploring the Roman Forum. I wore it tucked into my jeans with a navy cardigan and boat shoes, a very preppy explorer look. This time I left it untucked for an easy spring weekend look and paired it with things that I've had for just about as long.

the raspberry collins

First things first, I do apologize for being MIA these last few weeks. Posts every other day is not my jam and I don't intend to stick to that schedule for much longer. I'm not trying to be a drama queen or imply that I'm not capable of blogging alongside moving in to a new place, people clearly handle that just fine all the time, but after working a full day (we foolishly did not take off from work to do any of it, not aided by the fact that our days off didn't match up) coming home and dragging boxes up the stairs, when I finally sit down I want to do just that. And maybe watch an episode of Arrested Development or two before passing out. A lot of lessons have been learned. I'll get back into the swing of things soon. I'm hoping that happens before the arrival of the couch, but can't make any promises, mostly because I don't know when that will be. If it shows up tomorrow those miscellaneous bags occupying the living room rug are screwed.

Now on to happier topics of conversation, like happy hour and the fact that it's Friday. This week's drink of choice is a raspberry collins, selected because I bought raspberries earlier in the week to sprinkle over a salad with roasted chicken and goat cheese. Yum. Still drooling over that one. It's going to be a summer go to meal for sure. Like most things I make, this drink is quick and simple, far from complicated. And it doesn't hurt that it's bright pink and tropical looking.

THE RASPBERRY COLLINS
4 raspberries
1/2 ounce simple syrup
1 ounce lemon juice
2 ounces gin
1 ounce club soda

Muddle raspberries with simple syrup in a large glass. Add lemon juice and gin, stir, and top with club soda.

And there you have it. Have a wonderful weekend!

sandals

one . two . three . four . five

Each season there is a list, white dresses in the summer, bordeaux colored pants in the fall, cozy oversized cable knits to match the snow. Spring is when I usually begin my search for sandals. I've been in the market for a new pair of wedges for what feels like ages, still haven't found the strappy tan sandals of my dreams, and could definitely use a pair or two that are walk to work friendly. So this week, instead of composing a full outfit, I've rounded up a bunch of sandals I've had my eye on. Apparently, I've got a thing for neutral hues this season, but you know what? They go with everything so you won't be struggling in the morning to build an outfit around them. This simple flat strappy pair would make a great walk and wear anywhere sandal and I love lace detail on this pair. It's simple but sweet with a comfortable heel height. And I know these fringed Tibi mules are a bit over the top, and I can think of absolutely no occasion to wear them, but why not? They're fun and different, definitely a statement shoe.

Please share if you've found the perfect pair!

take it outside

On Saturday we woke up early with a plan to swing by Alice's Tea Cup to for scones to eat at our not so secret spot in the park. The weather was absolutely beautiful but my body was certainly confused. I seem to struggle getting used to the change in temperatures. I started the day on a very casual note in jeans and a tee shirt but realized about halfway through my coconut blueberry scone that there was no way I would be continuing the day in pants. Once I adjust, I'm fine, In fact, I love wearing sweaters and jeans year round, but until then, it's not going to happen. So I changed into my second outfit of the day before running more errands and stopping for a necessary coffee fix. You may remember this dress from last year (seen here and here). It's still one of my favorites, though looking back I probably should have belted it for this afternoon outing. It definitely makes it feel a little more put together and less beachy. Next time.

lavender honey whiskey lemonade

There have been a handful of developments around these parts this week. One of them is that we have the liquor cabinet all set up, one of the few things we can say we're done with. I'd prefer not to wonder what my grandmother might think of where I put it all, in the beautiful credenza that once sat in her living room. I find it fascinating how we either love or hate the styles we grew up around. I never realized how similar our sensibilities were until I started looking for furniture of my own. (Believe it or not, I actually pinned the very same Louis XVI settees from her living room.) I love it. Every time I open the top drawer I'm transported back to another time. I'm eight years old, tapping out the melodies of Irving Berlin on the piano. I hope that smell never fades. JD reassured me that the chances are dim as it's likely been that way for fifty plus years. Fingers crossed.

Now getting back on track. While looking for some easy spring cocktails to shake ourselves out of our old fashioned rut/routine, I came across one recipe for a lavender sour and another for a honey lemonade. Both sounded lovely and so I decided to combine the two flavors in one drink, resulting in lavender honey whiskey lemonade. It strikes the perfect balance, sweet and drinkable, full of spring flavor.

LAVENDER HONEY WHISKEY LEMONADE
3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
2 tablespoons simple syrup
2 ounces honey whiskey (we used Catskill Provisions)
2 drops of lavender bitters

In a larger glass or shaker combine lemon juice, simple syrup, whiskey and lavender bitters. Stir, pour over ice, and enjoy. Garnish with lemon or fresh sprigs of lavender if you like.

If you can't find honey whiskey or just don't feel like leaving the house, the regular kind will do just fine. To get that same sweet honey flavor, replace your standard simple syrup with a honey version by combining equal parts honey and water.

Happy Friday, have a great weekend!

summer daydream

top . denim . sunglasses . lipstick . clutch . bracelet . heels

Lately I've been so consumed with decorating and finding a (very specific style) coffee table that isn't obscenely wide. I haven't given much thought to clothing or shoes, what I'm going to wear in the morning, or what new things I might like to add to my collection. Who am I? What am I? Where can I find nyc apartment sized furniture? There are so many questions. But in my summery daydreams where all the trees are in bloom I'm wearing something like this. Clean white jeans with a loose striped top that dips down a little in the back. It's the kind of classic and simple outfit you could wear just about anywhere. Slip on a pair of sandals for a walk in the park or some suede heels to head out for drinks. Obviously my mind is set on the happy hour portion of the day. I've been eyeing these heels for too long and if it is socially acceptable to wear suede to a June wedding, I just might have to (finally) scoop them up.

One of these days things will bloom. The way I've been eyeing the tree outside my window, well maybe I'd hold off on growing leaves too.

spring stripes

Is it just me or did last week drag on like nobody's business? Filled with errands or not, the weekend was a welcome relief. We're still a ways off from being finished, but the new apartment is feeling much less like a sea of boxes and more like something actually lives there. It is important to note that I am sitting on the living room rug to write this because we finally put it down, for good!

After a week off from blogging, it would appear that I have definitely forgotten how to pose for outfit photos, but that's always been an awkward thing. Sunday, yesterday, we did some experimenting with shooting indoors against our very blog friendly white brick wall before heading out to brunch and finishing up some miscellaneous errands. This is an outfit I expect to be on repeat until it gets too hot to comfortably wear pants. I'm always a fan of stripes and so I doubled up. I had these espadrilles on my wishlist last summer but they sold out before I could get my hands on them. I was not missing the boat this year and so I have been patiently waiting to wear them for about a month now.

Also, wanted to share this video as it pretty much sums up my thoughts on my previous upstairs neighbors. Elephant bowling, "whacky Wednesday", and the laughing man are things I will not miss. Don't get me started on the occasional indoor rain.

On that note, Happy Monday and thank you for reading.

five breakfast cocktails to try this weekend

If I've been a little absent this week it's because things have been a bit hectic around here. We're in the process of moving. Surprise! It's wonderfully exciting and scary and a bit stressful all at once. I'll elaborate more next week, once I'm feeling more settled.

In the meantime, let's talk about some breakfast appropriate cocktails I have my sights set on. With the weather finally warming up (it was in the high fifties yesterday! I was actually able to wear my coat open!), I am very much looking forward to spending some quality time outdoors. One of my favorite things about spring and summer in the city is the plethora of outdoor eating options. Sidewalk seating, hidden gardens, and rooftops are where it's at and brunch holds a special place in my heart. Imagine a quiet, tree lined street on a cool summer morning in the West Village, sitting outside at a tiny cafe table crammed with an assortment of coffee cups and cocktails, your boyfriend covered in egg yolk because he hit it the wrong way with the fork. Best. Brunch. Ever. We still laugh about that, and aside from having to run back to the apartment to change immediately following, it was possibly the most perfect morning. While I may have to wait a little longer for one of those perfect weather brunches, the cocktails certainly do not have to wait. And what better time to try some pretty new recipes than Easter? Here are five breakfast cocktails on my list to try.

nordstrom giveaway

Believe it or not, I have actually worn my hair in a different style every day this week. Being that it's only Thursday, that's probably not very impressive, but I'm of the mindset that if my hair is freshly washed I absolutely need to wear it down, even if I haven't done it.

For a lack of better words, I wore this outfit to work on Sunday. (Which may look familiar if you follow me on instagram.) My office is a casual environment so I often don't get too dressed up to go there, especially if it's the weekend. I'll never complain about being able to wear jeans to work, but I kind of do miss being able to wear dresses and skirts and heels every day. Pretty as they may be, they're not ideal when you're walking a minimum of two miles to and from in a particularly windy stretch close to the river.

april

While complaining the other day about how cold it's been (and the spring snow!) I remembered that in a few short months it will be quite the opposite, I'll even call the subways unbearable and the idea of wearing pants will make me cringe. It certainly makes me feel much better about the current temperatures. So as I try to plan out my spring wardrobe I've been gravitating towards skirts, white ones with pretty designs in particular.

As a rule of thumb, before I purchase anything new I've been trying to think of at least three different ways to wear it, like a mental version of a "currently loving". I'm all for longevity when it comes to my closet, I'm very picky, so I think this is a good way for me to judge how much wear I might get out of a certain piece.

I love, love, love the broderie anglaise on this Étoile Isabel Marant skirt. It's pretty and feminine in a subtle way. (Also love this one and this one!) On a rainy April day I'd pair it with a silky blue top, a simple gold necklace, bright red nails, rain boots to match, and a cheerful umbrella - because, why not? I think it would look equally as cute with a red and white breton striped tee and tan sandals on seaside in July as it would with a chambray shirt and espadrilles that tie at the ankles in May.

Now, I am very tempted to make a slew of April Fool's jokes but I'm going to restrain myself. Happy Wednesday everyone!
