all in black

I wanted this top so badly last summer. I dreamed of wearing it with just about everything and even featured it in a currently loving post. Some time towards the end, I got lucky and scooped it up with a discount. I was so happy. Since then I've worn it countless times, usually with jeans and heels for a casual date night look. This time I decided to try something different, pairing it with black shorts and sandals. I love the all black everything look but haven't tried a summery version of it. Summer in the city can be unbearable so all black is usually out of the question for me. Since this top is so light and airy it actually worked out quite well.

I wore this on Saturday for our visit to Williamsburg. JD and I hopped on the L and went over to check out Artists & Fleas and Smorgasburg. I haven't done much Brooklyn exploring so it was really nice to get out of the city and experience a different neighborhood. It's so easy to get sucked into the bubble and not leave the immediate area surrounding your apartment, but we have been trying to make a conscious effort to see more of the city. I liked Williamsburg a lot more than I thought I would. The next stop will have to be the skee-ball pizza bar.

Happy Monday, I hope you had a great weekend!

lemon cupcakes w. lemon cream cheese frosting

Cupcakes have become a part of my post show at UCB tradition. JD and I have made a habit out of stopping at Billy's on the walk home. It's probably more of a Pavlov's Dog thing than a fun little treat at this point. The disappointment I felt the last time we saw a show and they were closed by the time we got there was a little much. The time before that, after Broad City, we actually ran five blocks to make it before close (coincidentally, much like Abbi and Ilana did in this video that I had not yet seen at the time). Maybe I should remedy that...

This weekend marks the 16th annual Del Close Marathon and I have tickets to see ASSSSCAT on Sunday. I am insanely excited and that is an understatement. I don't know how JD deals with me. I sound like one of Mischa's squeaky toys every time I say it out loud. It's not even guaranteed that the UCB 4 will definitely be there.

So since Billy's now closes at 9pm on Sundays (I could have sworn it used to be later, but I could very well be wrong) and I probably shouldn't have any additional sugar anyway as I will presumably already be giddy, I decided to have my cupcake early and swap out Friday's happy hour post for a sweet treat.

Lately, I have been really into everything lemon flavored so when I came across a recipe for lemon cupcakes it was a no-brainer. I had to make them. The original recipe for the cupcakes (only) said it would yield 15-18 so I cut the recipe in half, making 8. JD and I hardly need 8 cupcakes. I don't know what I'd do with 18.

What you'll need...

For the cupcakes:

3/4 cup flour
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 stick unsalted butter, melted
2 large eggs
1/2 tbsp vanilla
5/8 cup sugar
1/4 cup milk
1/8 cup fresh lemon juice
1/2 tbsp lemon zest

For the frosting:

4 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
3/4 cup confectioners sugar
1/2 tbsp fresh lemon juice
zest of half a lemon

To make:

Preheat oven to 350 °F.
In a medium bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
In a mixer, beat melted butter and sugar until smooth. Add eggs one at a time, mixing as you go. Then add vanilla, lemon juice, and lemon zest.
Carefully add in flour mixture and milk.
Line a cupcake or muffin pan with liners and fill about 2/3 full.
Bake for about 15 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
Set aside and let cool.

To make the frosting, mix room temperature cream cheese and confectioners sugar together until smooth. Add lemon juice and zest and mix until creamy.

I know everyone isn't a fan of lemon flavored sweets, but these came out so good. If you're in the mood for something sweet but also a little tart, these cupcakes come recommended!

little white dress

little white dress

If there's summer look I have loved year after year it's the little white dress. There's just something about white dresses and summer, they go hand in hand. I've been searching for the perfect one for as long as I can remember. I think it all started with high school graduation. (I still have that dress hanging in my closet.) If you've seen my pinterest lately, you'll know that I have been looking for some pretty new ones to add to my closet, or at least dreaming about it. I love this one by Alice + Olivia. The shape is perfect, it could easily be dressed up or down, and it's not visible in this photo, but the top of the back is sheer!

Maybe it's just the time of the year, you know, with the 4th of July rapidly approaching and all, but I'm really into red lately. I think little pops of red would suit this dress nicely. Essie's "clambake" has been my favorite nail polish for I don't know how long. It's constantly on my nails during the summer, and during some of the winter too. I just can't help it, it's so bright and cheerful.

I can't believe it's already Thursday! Thanks for reading and have a great day!

Early Sunday morning JD and I took a ride out to the beach. We met our friend Nick in the parking lot and trekked across the cool sand all the way to the end, towards the crowd. The small waves were dotted with surfers out for a contest taking place a hundred yards over. JD and Nick didn't participate. Instead they grabbed their boards and paddled around, catching a wave or two as I sat in the sand and took pictures. Unfortunately, the wind was coming off the dunes and I ended up getting attacked by a hundred little black flies. I'm still trying my best not to scratch the remaining bites. There's one of my middle finger that has really been a pain. Really bugs, who bites a finger? Regardless, this is one of my favorite pastimes, waking up at dawn to catch the sun rising over the Atlantic. If you're interested, you can see some of those fond memories here and here.

I love the combination of sweaters and shorts, as ridiculous as it may sound. The beach tends to be cool and breezy in the mornings (and evenings) so it ends up being the perfect thing to wear. It's comfortable. I've had this Madewell one for a year or two and it has remained my favorite for pairing with shorts. I love the slightly frayed looking pale peach and white stripes and think it lends itself well to the beach.
Later in the day, we went to pick up our newest project, a 19 foot O'Day Rhodes named Kiwi! There is a lot of work to do and it probably won't make it into the water this summer, but we am so excited!

Yesterday JD was officially admitted to the New York State Bar. I am so proud of him. Though it may sound cliché, he is the best person I know. He is so kind, generous, dedicated, hardworking, I could go on and on. The ceremony was held in the gorgeous Appellate Division, First Department. I couldn't get over the ornate ceilings and chandeliers (you may have seen this snap of the lobby ceiling on instagram). Of course, I was not permitted to take photographs inside the court room, but the stained glass dome was breathtaking.

JD and I were under the impression that proper court attire was required for both the new lawyers and their guests, meaning a jacket and closed toed shoes. Apparently this was not the case, or people just ignored the little note at the bottom of the ticket. I'm the kind of girl that would rather be over dressed than under dressed, so I played it safe in a black and white Erin Fetherston dress, blazer, my favorite Joie flats, and my Alexa. JD joked on our walk to the subway that I looked like I could be going to work with him. Though I'm not exactly sure how "court appropriate" this outfit would be, I did fit right in with the crowd.

Happy Tuesday and thanks for reading!

Saturday marked the first day of summer, something I've been looking forward to for quite a while. As happy as I was to have a real spring this year, there's just something about summer that doesn't compare. Beautiful weather is pretty much guaranteed.

I had been wanting this skirt since I first featured it in this currently loving post a few weeks ago and when Madewell had an additional 20% off I finally decided to scoop it up. I love the pale blue crosshatch print and thought it would be the perfect summer skirt. To start the season off, I paired it with a simple white tee and nude sandals. I was so happy when I first came across these sandals because they reminded me of a Chloé pair from last summer. Reese Witherspoon was often seen wearing them and I wanted them badly. Believe it or not, I actually like the look of these better. I like the stacked wooden look over the peach leather.

I hope you had a good weekend and start to your summer!

uniquely you with modcloth

uniquely you with mod cloth

Earlier this week I was asked to participate in ModCloth's Uniquely You challenge to style their lovely "I Ladylike it Like That" dress. By now we all know how I feel about dresses. In keeping with the pretty floral print, I would pair it with rose inspired accessories: a classic rose gold watch, my favorite Rifle Paper Co. iphone case, earrings and sandals to match, and an oxblood satchel.

One of the things I like most about ModCloth is that they carry so many different styles. My main draws seem to be the vintage inspired pieces. I have this thing for the 1920s and I'll take anything Grace Kelly ever wore. Seriously. I once got in trouble at the Cooper Hewitt when some of her Van Cleef and Arpels jewels were on display. But in all fairness I had already exited the exhibit and was taking a picture of the elaborate Carnegie staircase. Her tiara just so happened to be in the background.

Some other dresses I love:
This one reminds me of one Grace Kelly wore in To Catch a Thief.
How perfect would this maxi dress be for a summer day in the city?
And I love the light and airy, Santorini feel of this dress

Happy first official day of summer and have a great weekend!

hemingway daiquiri

Lately, I've been thinking a lot about our trip to New Orleans last summer. It's come up several times over this past week (or two) and I think about it every time I hear Tegan and Sara's "Closer". JD and I had a pretty awesome (if I do say so myself) pre-dinner dance party to that song on our trip and I always go back to that memory now when I hear it. It's a good one, both the song and the memory, though my dance moves could use some work. A while back, JD compared them to Kristen Wiig's awkward dance scene in Girl Most Likely.

One of my favorite things from our visit was going downstairs to the Carousel Bar for cocktails each night. We tried a few, but my favorite was the Hemingway Daiquiri. There are a lot of different recipes for this drink and since the Carousel Bar only lists their ingredients on the menu, I decided to pick the parts of each that most closely resembled it.

A while back I came across a photo of a girl wearing a black long sleeve crop top with a full skirt. For some reason I didn't think to save or pin it, but it's a look I kept in mind. I loved it. It completely changed the way I thought about crop tops. In my mind they were another bad '90s trend that I was happy to leave in the past. I know I was just a kid then, but I really was not a fan of '90s style. It was just so awkward. I certainly didn't think that I would be wearing a crop top myself as an adult, but the more polished update grew on me and I had to try it.

I decided to keep things simple with a black top and white high waisted skirt. I've had this skirt in my closet for years but never found quite the right top to pair with it. Since it's fitted until the point where it flares out, I felt that you could always see the lines from longer tops right through it. A cropped top seems to be just the right match for it, no lines and it makes things a little more interesting. I think this is going to be one of those date night outfits I repeat quite often.

Are you on board with this cropped trend?

day to night

day to night

sunglasses . blouse . silk shorts"monaco" lip gloss . flats / heels . clutch . necklace . iphone case

There are a lot of trends out there but the one that I am most excited about these days is silk shorts. New York is a dressy place, everyone always looks so stylish and well put together, all the time. Every now and then I'll take a look around and suddenly feel extremely under dressed, usually those moments occur when I'm wearing jeans after six pm. As a result, I prefer my outfits to be transitional. If I can take it from day to night just by changing my shoes at the end of the day, it's a winner in my book. Silk shorts help make that transition a little easier, especially on days like today when you could probably actually cook an egg on the sidewalk.

I love the pretty blue hue of this pair from J. Crew and they just so happen to be on sale! I would wear them with this pretty Joie top, I love the subtle pleating and embroidery, fun sunglasses and little pops of red.

What's your take on the trend?

At this point I'm sure you could guess what I'm about to say. I found this silky open back top on sale at Madewell last summer and just couldn't pass it up. I loved the open back and the neck tied into a bow, still do in fact. And I have actually worn it on this blog once before, last August on our trip to New Orleans. You can read about that here if you like. If not, I won't be offended. Oh how I'd like to go back there. We had such a good time on that trip!

This time, I paired it with my new favorite shorts (they are so comfortable, absolutely perfect for beach days) and a wide brimmed panama hat. Can just I say how much I love this hat? Now that I'm thinking about it, I first spotted it in the New Orleans shop on that very trip. It started to pour on our walk back from the French Market so we ducked into the shop on Royal Street. The power went out while JD and I (but mostly just me) were trying on hats and they locked us in the shop to wait until it came back on. I fell in love this hat but they didn't have it in my size. It was one of those things that I just kept thinking about afterwards. Long story short, I ended up finding it in my size in the Park Slope shop sometime mid December and the rest is history.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go dream of beignets while I have my coffee. Happy Tuesday, thank you for reading, and enjoy the rest of your day!

I've always been a dress girl. I'm told the only reason I started wearing pants was because I decided it got too cold to stand at the kindergarten bus stop in one in the snow. For one reason or another I always feel a little weird wearing casual shorts in the city. Dresses are my go to, especially in the summer. While it is technically not summer just yet (one more week!), temperatures have been high, the humidity uncomfortable, and the weekend traffic heading East, away from the city towards the beaches. This weekend we were lucky enough to get out there and soak up some much needed sun. The weather was just lovely. There is nothing better than a breezy day spent on the beach.

Today I'm teaming up with the lovely Hanna from to style one of my favorite summer dresses. For my look I chose a comfortable black shirtdress. I'm a sucker for a shirtdress. It's simple, classic, and can hang in your closet for years without going out of  style. I wore this one quite frequently last summer and plan to do the same this one. It originally came with a black cloth belt that ended up being too big so I switched it out for one that actually came with a skirt. I wear the belt more often than I do the skirt. Don't you love it when that happens? Over the weekend I paired it with a matching clutch, red sandals, and a few nautical inspired bracelets.
