the gin old fashioned

the gin old fashioned | cocktail recipe
Lately JD and I have gotten into drinking Old Fashioneds. It all started with a trip to pick up bitters. We both love whisky, and on our grand search for fun and different drink recipes we have noticed that most of them contain Angostura bitters, which we did not keep at the ready. It has been quite a different story since then. The Old Fashioned is a simple, yet delicious drink that has a nice history behind it, dating back to 1806 and credited as the first "cocktail". Since all of the whisky is understandably gone, this week we turned to gin and while I do love a bourbon version more, this one  hit the spot quite nicely.

THE GIN OLD FASHIONED
1 teaspoon sugar
2 dashes Angostura bitters
1 teaspoon water
2 ounces gin

Add one teaspoon of sugar to a small glass or tumbler, two dashes of Angostura bitters on top, and a teaspoon of water. Stir until sugar dissolves. Add gin, stir, and finish with ice.

This cocktail is perfectly balanced without a garnish but if you wish, an orange slice or cherry can be thrown on top.

Oh and rumor has it it was traditionally a pre-breakfast drink so... Cheers to the weekend!

  5. Thank goodness for pre-breakfast drinks. And I'm thrilled for this gin version of an old fashioned! I've been on quite the gin kick lately. Not that I'm drinking a lot of gin... but gin is my choice when I am drinking.

    Have a great weekend!
